Working with the Industrial Engineering and Cardiology departments at the University of Missouri, we sought to shed light upon an incredibly pressing mental health issue. As a growing trend in the US, more teens are being diagnosed with negative mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety. We wanted to see if these conditions would manifest into cardiovascular risk in adulthood. In this study we essentially wanted to find if there was a correlation between negative adolescent mindset and adulthood cardiovascular risk.
I was able to leverage a data set of over 14000 individuals, identify high utility questions that could be indicative of the conditions we were seeking via survey of psychiatrists, and wrote significant portions of the data analysis. What we found was kids reporting high levels of stress during school, feeling depressed on most days, etc were at far greater risk of developing hypertension and obesity just 15 years later with p values < 0.001. We published these findings in the International Journal of Cardiology where I'm listed as an author. Furthermore, I traveled to MA and delivered a key oral presentation on this research in front of cardiologists at the Boston World Congress on Health.
